Binham Priory St Mary and Holy Cross.

The remains of the church are mainly 12th- and 13th-century in date, with the later, western parts the latest. The eastern arcades of the nave (beyond what is now the parish church) are richly decorated with Norman chevron and cylindrical ‘billet’ mouldings, whereas the later, western arches (inside the church) are pointed and ribbed in Early English style. This Priory was founded by William the Conqueror's nephew Peter de Valoines and Albreda his wife, in about 1100 and gave the Manor and church of St Mary, Binham to the Abbey of St Albans, in order that there might be a priory settled there of Benedictine Monks. At the Dissolution, it was granted to Thomas Paston, Esq, fifth son of Sir William Paston, Knight and was valued at £150. The remains are very interesting and extensive, but apart from the nave of the church, nothing is entire. Cautley wrote, when I first visited this church the floor of the nave and all the conventual building were lying under five feet of earth, but luckily the whole has been taken over by H.M. Office of Works, and all has been excavated and cleared away and one can see the extent of this Benedictine Priory. Once it was a great cruciform building but all is in ruins, including the aisles, and except the nave only. The nave inside shows magnificent Norman work, with arcades and triforium (all blocked) and a clerestory. It is obvious that they rebuilt or extended the nave westwards in the early 13th century, for the western bays and the lovely west front are of this date. This west front must have been a glorious sight when intact, but the great west window (made huge to light the rather dim Norman interior) is blocked up with brickwork. Seven Sacrament font is much mutilated, but originally it had figures round the shaft, it stands on two steps the top traceried. Remains of old screen now painted over with "goody" texts. Fine-poppy headed benches with pierced and traceried backs, two misericordes and early Stuart table. Arched and coved sedilia.
The building is English Heritage, and more can be seen on their site. churchesofnorfolk.com
