Alderford, Saint John the Baptist Church

Alderford, Saint John the Baptist Church, With its narrow 14th century tall tower, its out of the ordinary pinnacles and buttressing on its sides to hold it erect, looks out of proportion to the lower church roof. The tower is built for just one bell. There is no maker's name or date, but it does have an inscription of "I mad:  in name: of sen: ion baptist". (Made in the name of John the Baptist) With its chancel and nave surviving from the 12th century! Most of what is seen today is of the 14th century! The 14th century front door is decorated with an ancient closing ring handle, marked in zig-zag/criss-cross effect with straight grooves and punched rosettes and has iron strap hinges! Alderford, Saint John the Baptist Church, Inside is a seven sacrament font, which is one of only 25 left in Norfolk and 40 in England. There is no sign of a chancel arch, the roof stretches end to end. Not much parking, walk to key, possible problem for disabled. The tower here seems slender, though it has western three-stage diagonal buttresses up the belfry, Its four top pinnacles are rather curious in that they have flat faces on the east and west, but only a narrow edge facing north and south. They are more like gable crosses, pierced with cross surrounded by a diamond shaped cusped ring, possibly added in the late 17th century. The tower was built in the early 14th century, being added on to an earlier nave. The church incorporates a Mass Dial on the naves face. There is no sign of a chancel arch and the roof stretches end to end, the tallest south nave window has some medieval fragments of glass in its tracery. Credit to Lyn Stilgoe.
