Ashby Saint Mary Church, Not far from Norwich the capital of Norfolk, Ashby Saint Marys Church has a square west tower, 3 bells, nave and chancel continuous under roof, and south porch. Contains work of four periods, Norman and the three centuries of Gothic. Very fine specimen of Norman doorway inside the south porch. There is an aumbry in the north wall of the chancel, this discovered during restorations in 1903. The roof is continuously covering the nave and the chancel. The tower is 15th century, the font is 17th century, the cover also. there is a beautiful Poor Man's box. There are nice 17th century rails, and a Norman slit in north wall of the nave. The roofs and the benches are modern. Painting a pretty picture Arthur Mee stated: Ashby Saint Marys Church, It is one of the small neighbours of Norwich. where we found Darby and Joan in a churchyard shaded by firs and oaks, and a beautiful Norman doorway leading into its trim little church, which has a high flint tower rising above mellowed red roofs. An ivied porch shelters the doorway, which has an arch carved with zigzag and resting on four shafts with carved capitals. The rest is chiefly 15th century, with a Norman lancet in the nave and a priest's doorway 700 years old. A roundel of old glass has an angel with yellow wings holding shields with lions. There is an old Elizabethan chalice and an old pillar alms-box with three locks; and the altar rails are 17th century. Two charming last century gravestones stand together by the churchyard path, each with a sculptured panel; they are in memory of a farmer and his wife.He was George Basey; she was Ann. Ann was first to die, the 71, and we see her in bonnet and apron, with stick, bag and basket, feeding her geese in the farmyard: her thatched house is at the side and her husband is leaning on the fence as he watches her. He followed her when he was 82, and his stone shows him scattering corn to the turkeys.
