Barton Bendish Saint Andrew's Church

Barton Bendish Saint Andrews Church.

Barton Bendish Saint Andrew's Church, one of two churches in the village, the other St Mary's, this the more modern. A village in which my Grandmother and Grandfather came from, Florence May Hudson and William Thomas Smith. I wonder which church they would have used? With a name like Smith, could my grandfathers ancestry have taken in the position of Blacksmiths in the village, this taken placed at the now the Berney Arms, the old forge now taking in paid holiday makers. "Barton" (outlying settlement) inside the ditch! referring to the Devils Ditch, a defensive work controlling movements along the Roman Road, (Main Road at Marham. With it's 15th century porch patterned with the cross of Saint Andrew, it's late Norman doorway and some Jacobean dwarf box pews, oak carved and erected in 1623/8, and oak carved pulpit too standing precariously on one leg, there is an octagonal font with flat cover too and also a magnificent timbered roof, scissor beam style. And some of the most beautiful wall paintings on the walls behind the alter that I have ever seen. In Edward the First's time, the rector had a house and 30 acres of glebe; the rectory is valued in the King's Books at 3l. 1s. 10d. ob. and is discharged of tenths and first fruits; the old value was 5 marks, and the vill paid 20d. Peter-pence. The rector receives from the lord of the manor 6l. 13s. 4d. per annum, and it being returned of that clear yearly value, it is capable of augmentation. It pays 18d. synodals, and 7s. 7d. ob. Archdeacon's procurations, and 9d. ob. visitatorial procurations to the Bishop.
Saint Andrew's is Grade 1 listed and there are on going plans for renovation. There are medieval glazed tiles in the sanctuary,
