Barton Bendish St Mary's Church

Falling redundant in 1970, this smaller of two churches Barton Bendish Saint Mary's Church, in the village stands alone in my ancestral birthplace. Hudson and Smith being its names. None were found, though the name Benjamin Button shows prominently, a name ignominiously with a movie film, but no connection. Saint Mary's has little of what I look for in a church, though it is the church I love entering. It is relatively plain, but has enough features to draw you to it again. With its decorated outside doors, high bell tower and original church pews. it has heads either side of the door in head wear of the time and featuring a large Consecration Cross, (there are few of these survived).
For a church of Norfolk, it is one of my favourites. It is a place of worship, a place to reflect and a beautiful place to visit. There is a Stuart table inscribed "E.L. 1633." wall paintings and a coffin. The name Barton Bendish means "Barton" (outlying settlement) inside the ditch! referring to the Devils Ditch, a defensive work controlling movements along the Roman Road, (Main Road at Marham.  Until 1710 it had a tower, at the west end of the nave (In 1421, Thomas Lovel had left £1 towards new bells) ; in that year the tower fell to storms, also demolishing the western part of the nave, this was never rebuilt to its full length, falling redundant in 1970 as before mentioned, this church is now in the hands of CCT. it has a bell turret, 1 bell, nave and chancel. The modern west gable has a Norman doorway incorporated in it, this was brought fro All Saint's Church (It stood in Saint Andrew's churchyard, to the south-west, pulled down in 1787 and part of its materials used to repair Saint Mary's, the greater part was used to make a road) when the latter was pulled down. The rest of the church is mainly Transitional Decorated and Perpendicular periods. There are some mural paintings to be seen. And the tomb of Walter Baldwin who was rector in 1349.
