Beccles Saint Michaels Church NR32 3JN

Beccles Saint Michaels Church NR32 3JN, this building has been a powerful reminder to our past for over 600 years, the Domesday survey of 1086 states that Beccles had on church, it had also twenty-four acres of glebe, three quarters of the Abbot and one quarter to the King, it also stated that the town had twenty six Burgesses. It was a town of considerable importance. Now however there is no trace of this earlier Saxon church. There are many Saxon churches in the area, but nothing really to note here. Starting with Norman architecture, Beccles includes many other styles, Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular and even tudor are traced in the building. The interior of the church was completely gutted by a great fire on Saint Andrew's Eve 29th Novenber 1586, all the woowork and the roof were destroyed, more than 80 houses in the locality were burnt to the ground and the damage was estimated at £20,000. The new chancel screen, new being 1919, the year the Crowfoot family donated its price to the church. A modern interpretation of late Perpendicular style, its ogee arches are crocketed, finialled and cusped. The font, recently moved from near the south entrance now stands at the west end. it is massive and imposing and in spite of its crudeness in design, is said to have a certain dignity. It is currently apart near the south door entrance. the church has a chest, a clock by Edward Blowers made around 1675, and a coat of Arms to Charles II. Here like West Walton the bell tower is separate from the church. Called a Campanile, a usually freestanding bell tower. Old documents state that it should have had a steeple, but this was deemed unsafe. Estimated at 97 feet high, its around 3,000 tons in weight. It has a Roche Abbey stone finish and like the rest of the church is beautliful. Inside is a Ringer's Gotch. A jug, made by a local potter called Samuel Stringfellow, its dated 1872, was presented to J Patman and is housed in the Ringer's Chamber. it has the inscription: When I am with liquor strong, Each man drink once, and then dingdong. Drink not too much to cloud your knobs, Lest you forget and make the Bobs.

Saint Michaels has a disabled friendly tiolet unlocked inside.
