Beeston Saint Lawrence, Church,

Beeston Saint Lawrence Church, a 14th century Saxon round towered church with a fluted heavily carved font, a heavily carved pulpit and it has Georgian vaulting and several monuments. The church inside is quite plain. But looks lovely,  it has several Victorian style pews. H.Munro Cautley F.S.A., A.R.I.B.A, wrote:West tower, north porch, nave and chancel. The round tower is probably pre-Conquest. Modern roofs and benches. Nice 14th century buttresses to chancel with gablets at first set-off and moulded returns at set-off. The east wall is flush panelled in lower stage. Beeston Saint Lawrence, It has a little round thing and a big round thing was the way Arthur Mee described Beeston, The little one treasured at Barton Hall, the big one built by Saxons, for it is a round tower that the church has. The church is od Saxon stone, featuring a mass dial and an impressive tomb at the altar of Jacob Preston, who lived at the Hall in Charles Stuart's days and was loyal to the King. When the Scots surrendered Charles to Parliament four gentlemen were appointed to wait on the King, and Jacob Preston was one of them, and when the King's treachery led to their withdrawal from his service, Charles gave a ring to the faithful Jacob, who brought it home to Barton Hall, where it is cherished to this day. Beeston Saint Lawrence Church, the fine roof growing from the 15th century clerestory has battered figures on the hammerbeams and on the supports between the windows. A battered roof looks down the north aisle. Old screens enclose the aisle chapels, one keeping its lovely tracery. Curious in its effect is the 15th century chancel screen, its cornice gone, the bare arches ragged with broken carving, and most of the painted figures scratched away from the panels, which are adorned with red and gold tracery. Though the figures on the arm-rests are broken off, the old poppyhead seats are still rich in appearance, some having quatrefoil tracery and borders of Tudor flowers in the backs. Among traces of old wall painting is a consecration mark. The Plain Jacobean pulpit is much restored, and an old pointed cover crowns the font. There is a monument to Isaac Preston 1708 by sculptor, Rust.
