Beetley Saint Mary's Church.

Beetley Saint Mary's Church, What a beautiful little church, Beetley, or Betella, meaning Possibly grove from which wooden mallets were obtained The second element is Old English leah. The first element may be Old English bietel (beetle, mallet). A heavy wooden hammer for knocking in stakes. When the Domesday Book was written in 1087, there was already a church here at Beetley, the church in mention was probably wooden in build, it would have been part of an enclosure, like that, that used to be in the Iceni village of Cockley Cley that is no more. It has a tower, this can be seen on the advancement up the path to a front porch. The tower, built around 1330s, it was then added a belfry in 1500, this with wooden shutter sound board windows. It has a parapet that was added in 1911. The church no longer has its roods, but it does have its decorative font that dates from the Perpendicular Period, complete with font cover. There are two scratch dials found cut into the stone frame of the porch doorway, these: also known as Mass Dials, these were a very early and primitive form of sun dial, they were used by priests to advertise the time of the next service. Usually in the form of a semi circle about ten inches across, they were scratched into the south wall of the church. A hole was made at the centre and a number of lines scratched from the hole to the arc. The priest would place a short stick in the hole and when the sun shone the shadow of the stick on to one of the lines, the next service would start.
