Bessingham, Saint Mary Church,

Bessingham Saint Mary's Church has such beautiful stained glass done by Moulton, James Powell & Sons (17th century), The signs of the white monk, Whitefriars signature, is there clearly for all to see. That too of Charles Kempe, his Golden Garb, or Wheatsheaf show, this time with the "Golden Garb and Black Tower. Bessingham was long inhabited before the Saxon tower of the church was built. In 1870 Roman pottery was found and again at sometime Roman tiles were used to edge the niche over the entrance to the porch. During King John's reign, the village once William of Normandy (The Conquerer) arrived, it was given to Sir Piers de Bessingham (Basingham) whose father Eustace was sub-tax collector of Norfolk and Suffolk. The church is Saxon and probably dates around 1050. It is a member of the RCT, Round Churches Trust of which only 125 still remain. (See separate page)
