Bodney, Saint Mary's Church, As per the leaflet offered for sale in the church. much of the land of the parish of Bodney, about two thousand acres is now covered by the Stanford Training Area, so is a haven for wildlife, but inaccessible to the ordinary person. Many soldiers have trained at Bodney Camp. There was once a mansion, Bodney Hall, belonging to the Tasburgh Family in the 18th century, to the south across the road from the church, but it was demolished c1820. It's foundations lie under a field, although there is a farmhouse called Bodney Hall. The Old Hall was used as a safe haven during The French Revolution, from 1792-1810, by a group of Benedictine Nuns from Montargis. The Nuns had a boarding school for girls therefrom 1794. Some of the Nuns were said to be buried to the north of the church, including Eloise Adelaide de Bourbon, the daughter of the Prince of Conde', who became a nun on 9th July 1805.
In spite of a very low population the church has survived. It is approached through wrought iron gates, that proudly proclaim "Saint Mary's Church Bodney". Bodney Saint Mary's Church, has a nave and chancel in one, no huge main tower, but a small bell tower. no original windows, We have a Jacobean pulpit here, and benches with some that have tracery and piercing to their backs. They also have poppyheads. Bodney, Saint Mary's Church, Nave and chancel, There is evidence of Saxon work at north east corner, and an early slit window north of nave is blocked up.
