Booton, Saint Michael & All Angels Church.

Booton, Saint Michael & All Angels Church. Perhaps the most enthralling ecclesiology curiosity in Norfolk. designed in the 1870s by the then incumbent, the Rev Whitwell  Elwin, an amateur architect, it is a riot of the "middle pointed". Outside is a veritable forest of pinnacles which, along with the rest of the masonry, were unfortunately made of bath stone which weathers badly in the East Anglian climate. The nave, copied from Temple Balsall in Warwickshire, is very impressive, but the chancel, with Mr Elwin was at pains to be scrupulously correct, is a little lifeless. The hammer-beam roof is perhaps somewhat massive for a church of this size, and the angels project so far forward that one is not surprised to learn that they were made by a man whose real occupation was the making of figure-heads for boats. My thoughts as driving in the distance was WOW, on getting outside and looking at the building from the front lay by area, I still thought the same. On getting in. What a nice wedding venue this would now make. Booton Saint Micheal and All Angels Church, near Reepham, is entirely rebuilt by Rev Whitwell Elwin, between 1875 and 1900, in the most ornate decorated style, with every window of stained glass and a most elaborately carved open timber roof. It now consists of two west towers set diagonally, nave chancel and north porch. Altogether about £80,000 was said to have been spent. A monument to Peter Elwin Esq., who died in 1798 has been preserved from the old church. (Messent) St. Michael the Archangel Church at Booton (near Reepham) is known as the 'Cathedral of the Fields'. It was designed by the Rev Whitwell Elwin who was a descendant of Pocachontas. The church itself has no pews. There are chairs only, and since fracturing my back never trust a chair. There are some really beautiful features inside. Care of CCT, churchesofnorfolk.com by the Old Boi.
