Bradenham Saint Andrew's Church.

Bradenham Saint Andrew's Church. Its association with the Haggard family is shown in the churchyard with one grave inscribed to H. Rider Haggard of "Beatrice" fame. This Norfolk author found his final resting place here. Henry Rider Haggard, generally known as H. Rider Haggard or Rider Haggard, was born at Bradenham Norfolk, the eighth of ten children, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a barrister, and Ella Doveton, an author and poet. His father was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to British parents. Haggard was initially sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to study under Reverend H. J. Graham, but unlike his elder brothers who graduated from various private schools, he attended Ipswich Grammar School. This was because his father, who perhaps regarded him as somebody who was not going to amount to much, could no longer afford to maintain his expensive private education. After failing his army entrance exam, he was sent to a private crammer in London to prepare for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, for which he never sat. During his two years in London he came into contact with people interested in the study of psychical phenomena. Even if you know that "Ham" derived from the Old English word for "Homestead", you would not be able to say for certain that the Bradenhams, could mean either "Broad river meadow" (brad + hamm) or "broad homestead" (brad + ham) The famous sources of these words are Bede's History of the Church and the Doomsday Book. Bradenham Saint Andrew's Church has a square south-west tower, a clock and 2 bells, the base forming south porch and attached to the south aisle; nave with aisles and chancel. It is mainly in the Decorated style, but there is some earlier work incorporated ans some Perpendicular windows inserted. There is a monumental stone in the chancel to Thomas de Cailly, who died as rector here in 1318. He was a son of Sir Adam de Cailly, There are stained glass windows in memory of the Haggard family, as well as brasses to them.
