The church was locked when I first arrived at Brampton Saint Peter Church, then along came a gentleman on a cycle, he announced himself as Mr Philips, and what a lovely man. He was only there to water the memorial monuments plants, but he could have shown me around all day. Brampton is a round towered church, The church built first and the tower added to it. There is insufficient features to fix the date of the tower, but it is likely to be the 11th century. W.J. Goode has measured the towers of all Norfolk Churches and finds that Norman walls are always thicker than the earlier Saxon ones. This the measurements = Saxon Period. The tower has an octagonal top added in the 15th century. Brampton Saint Peter's Church was spoken of by Messent when he described it as having a round west tower, its top storey octagonal, 1 bell, nave, chancel, south porch and vestry. The base of the tower is Norman, the top being 15th century; the rest of the church is mainly early Decorated. There are several good brasses, (these had just been restored before my visit, instead of popping them back where they were, they were placed on a special board on the opposite side) This leaving missing brass marks where they first hung. There appears to have been a chapel on the south side of the chancel, as the east wall of the nave has a blocked up arch. Beeston Regis, All Saints Church. churchesofnorfolk.com by the Old Boi.
