Breckles, Saint Margaret Church,The name of the village comes from the Old English bracc-loes, this meaning "meadow by the newly cleared land" There was a church on this site since before the Normans arrived. in 1066. Part of this time remains even today. The lower part of the church is Anglo Saxon, dating back to possibly 1000 - 1050, this is far more obvious inside. Though being round, the top fifth of the tower is octagonal and in a chequered decoration. There is also what could be an old discarded font outside. Inside, one noticed the beautiful square font, this raised on five pedestals on a short plinth. There is an hour-glass 17th century, showing a time when sermons were long and needed to be times. There are benches said to date from 15th century restored in 1856. The church also holds three lower children's pews near the font. Rood screen, round tower with hexagonal top.West tower, south porch, nave and chancel. The round tower is of Norman build with 15th century octagonal top added, the Norman arch to nave having carved imposts. Modern roofs and fittings and hour-glass stand. The feature of this church other than the round tower is the Norman square font, it has four square figures carved on the east face, probably intended for the Evangelists, interlaced arches on the north and the other two faces with various carved patterns. An unusual feature is the carving of the spandrils to bowl on top of font. Breckles, Saint Margaret Church, you can find wonderful ledger stones in the chancel.
