Bridgham Saint Mary Church NR16 2RY


Bridgham Saint Mary Church, newar Thetford, west belfry, 1 bell, nave, chancel, and south porch. it is mainly Early English, with some later insertions. The south doorway is Norman and shows some fine work of that period. There is a memorial window in the nave to John Wellingham. Dedicated to Saint Mary, it's chiefly 14th century, this church has a very nice octagonal font with the Trinity on east face, and what looks like the Vernicle of saint Veronica on the west front. It stands on two steps the top quatrefoiled. These are also old, but plain Norman font. Fine paintings of Moses and Aaron which used to accompany the Commandments. Remains of the base of rood screen with diapered panels. Unusual piscina and credence shelf in nave, and very nice two-seated graduated sedilia and double piscina, with good tracery above in chancel. Low-side window south of chancel blocked up, fragments of 14th century glass in chancel and Stuart table. Jacobean font cover and one bench in chancel is inscribed "john Watsim and Alys hys Wyf".
