Buckenham, Saint Nicholas Church. The Old Rectory in Buckenham- once owned by a reverend Rev Haslan at Buckenham who was so successful he had a pulpit installed in his garden so he could preach to the masses, who would come on train from far and wide. Buckenham Saint Nicholas church now itself under the charge of CCT, is currently locked. Was previously with the Redundant Churches Fund, this beautiful looking church with its octagonal shaped tower from the Early English Period has tall lancets on each face. Apart from the block of pews, 19th century, the font is left. This is a very fine piece with well preserved figures of saints and apostles. Buckenham, Saint Nicholas Church. west tower, nave and chancel, the tower is interesting as being octagonal and probably 13th century. I do not understand the Norman western doorway which is probably a later insertion, as it is built of a softer and more friable stone than they employed in the doorway to the south which is also Norman. The top of the tower is arcaded and at the cardinal points is pierced for belfry windows. Modern roofs and fittings, but a very nice late 14th century font with eight figures round the base and eight more round the bowl with crocetted arches over them. Victorian Arms. A hundred years ago they discovered in this church an alabaster tablet depicting the martydom of Saint Erasmus and an early crucifix, but instead of preserving them in the church as objects of interest they presented them to the Norwich Museum. churchesofnorfolk by the Old Boi
