Castle Rising Saint Lawrence Church.

Castle Rising Saint Lawrence, this is a very interesting church with nave, south porch, central tower, south transept and chancel. from the archaeological point of view it has suffered too severe a 19th century restoration. The west front is magnificent and there are north and south doorways. All roofs and benches are modern, The south doorway has a slip bar, which fits into a hole constructed when the walls were built. Flanking the fine Norman arch with well carved capitals are two nave altars with piscinas. The chancel arch is a little later and the transept arch is a fine example of 13th century. Stuart table in south transept with fragments of a Crucifixion on window sill. There are three beautiful lancets to chancel. The font is one of a group of Norman fonts with carvings, for which Norfolk is famous.
Castle Rising, once a larger town than the now King's Lynn, it had its own church and its own castle and own fishing harbour/fleet, it is said by locals to be connected by tunnel from the Lynn magnificent Red Lady Chapel, some feat on its own. Thought to be Norman in design, this 12th century parish church, restored by A. Salvin in 1849 at the expense of Fulke Grenville-Howard in 1846, a church that is still in that families hands now!
Further additions were made at Mary Howard's expense in 1883.
This carrstone, Sandringham sandstone, built and dressed with Barnack limestone, looks and seems something more suitable for a major city. With its many Romanesque decorations, it is a splendid example of a building for worship. Castle Rising Saint Lawrence, Postcode PE31 6AG.
