Coltishall, Saint John the Baptist Church,

Coltishall Saint John the Baptist, with its 15th century tower stands close to the road in a busy vibrant village, the tower itself stands at 67 feet, it has four stages, divided by string courses. The clock was added in 1877, made of stone are what look like wine goblets, these are in fact "I", (The Roman letter for "J") and capped with the crown of martyrdom for Saint John the Baptist. The spandrels above the west door show an Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God. Inside there is a beautiful Norman Purbeck font, it has rounded arches, four on each side, it stands on four shafts, with wider central column, the cover, is Jacobean style, made and given in 1965. The rood screen is 15th century and was much restored in 1910.

Coltishall had RAF Coltishall, some call the place Badersfield, this after a pilot called Douglas Bader. It was said he was there for a few weeks, he was there for a wee while longer, it's said he had command of a Hurricane Squadron there during WWII and he wasn't the only famous RAF Pilot to fly from there, “Sailor” Malan and “Cats Eyes” Cunningham also flew from Coltishall. West tower, north porch, nave, south aisle and chancel. This church is entirely thatched. The 15th century tower has a nice flush panelled base course with chalices for the dedicatory saint. Nice west front with stooled niches on either side of west window and sound holes. The old west doors are unfortunately daubed with paint. 15th century porch with niche over doorway, typical 13th century and 14th century arcade with clustered columns. Two Saxon windows are to be seen high up on north wall of nave. Modern roofs and benches, a poor 16th century formerly coved screen, Stuart table, and simple cinquefoiled arches to sedilia. The organ is built of constructed by Norman & Beard Ltd of London.
