Cranwich Saint Mary's Church. Cranwich or Cranwisse, meaning: Cranes, marshy meadow, cran (crane) + wisce (marshy meadow). Cranwich Saint Mary's Church.
Near to Northwold on the Stoke Ferry to Brandon road, this quaint thatched roofed building with round tower, is hidden by trees. It stands in the back garden almost of people's land, there is no real road, and at times the grass may be soft. The round tower and much of the Nave and Chancel are pre-conquest. The Tower has circular windows with carved stone knots like primitive tracery. Battlements have been added at a later date. Not the usual flat roof cover.
At Cranwich Saint Mary's Church, there are a variety of Windows in the Nave and Chancel. The South Porch shelters a transitional doorway, so every style from Saxon to Perpendicular can be seen here. The roof has recently been re-thatched thanks to grant aid from English Heritage. This church of Saint Mary's has a west tower, south porch and chancel. The round tower is Saxon with Perpendicular circular windows high up with interlacing stonework, it looks to be carved as one stone. There are plastered ceilings and a plain 13th century piscina. There are Hanoverian Arms, 1760-1837.
Cranwich Saint Mary's Church, round west tower, a clock and 1 bell, nave, chancel and south porch. The base of the tower is Saxon, but early English above. The rest of the church is of all three periods of Gothic intermixed. There is some ancient stained glass to be seen.
