Crownthorpe nr Wymondham Saint James Church

Crownthorpe nr Wymondham Saint James Church, near Wymondham, square west tower, 1 bell, nave, chancel and south porch. Mainly early Decorated work with some Perpendicular windows inserted. There were evidently two side chapels, as blocked up arches in the north and south walls reveal. The font shows some early work. There is a 13th century double piscina in the chancel. Memorial tablets can be seen to the Watson, Bunn and Buckle families. west tower, south porch, nave and chancel (without chancel arch). Plain 16th century hexagonal font, Stuart table and three Flemish carved panels in pulpit, representing the Ascension, Christ with the woman of Samaria at the well, and the Sermon on the Mount. Late 13th century double piscina with double arch and central pillar. Low-side window on south and the tower has sound holes in it, but at my visit was covered with ivy to the top and will soon be in ruins if nothing is done. (Cautley) The house is now under private ownership. The lady of the home allowed me to take pictures of the front and tower of the building. The grounds are very overgrown with trees that it was difficult to get a reasonable image to give justice the the todays version of this church. Many thanks for allowing me access though at such very short notice. Much obliged the Old Boi.
