Dunton Saint Peter's Church.
Dunton Saint Peter's Church.

This church belongs to a group of churches called "Upper Wensum Churches" in this group of churches are Dunton, Great Ryburgh, Sheresford, Colkirk, Oswick, Whissonsett, Gateley, Horningtoft and Brisley. Sheresford, St Peter's Dunton is  in the care need of the Norfolk Churches Trust. Technically redundant, but still used for the Christian worship, with services two or three times a year. It is medieval, but is striking for featuring distinctive pre-Raphaelite style Victorian stained glass. The most interesting feature is its 1910 recreation of something almost every parish church had up to the Reformation; a rood loft on top of a rood screen, accessed from a winding staircase, Dunton, means Hill enclosure. OE dun (hill) + Tun (enclosure, settlement, farm). Otherwise known as Dunto-cum Doughton, near Fakenham, has a square west tower, a clock and 1 bell, nave, chancel and south porch. The style is early Decorated with some Perpendicular windows inserted. There is an inscription to Matthew Lancaster, a descendant of the famous family of that name. Most of the chancel windows have 19th century stained glass as memorials. in the west tower, there are sound holes with various tracery patterns. Some windows of the church are of around 1300 century others Perpendicular. Inside, the reader's desk and lectern stand on curious oblong bases with tops changing to elongated octagons by means of angle scallops and heads. There is stained glass in the east window dated 1863, that are quite good and looks to be the Powell's design. Cautley wrote: west tower, south porch, nave and chancel, modern roofs and benches. Plain 15th century tower with sound holes and pillar piscina. In spite of having a modern screen and loft the church at the time of my visit was in a shocking state of neglect, being smothered in ivy. in some cases, this was the same in 2018 when I went. In certain places the ivy was really growing again. it does not do the stone work any good.
