East Barsham, All Saints Church, (Walsingham), 2018 Being re-roofed. the church locked, H.Munro Cautley FSA., ARIBA wrote of this church, North West tower, and nave, The foundations of a south transept and chancel are still visible. There is a Norman south Doorway and a 14th century window above, now both blocked up. The 13th century tower has only the first stage left and the entrance is by the north door of same.I think the roof is the plainest I have ever seen, match-boarded up to the ridge with an iron collar bar. Simple old bench ends with poppy heads. Fragments of Saint Anne in alabaster on the chancel window sill. A large monument to a Mary Calthorpe 1640. East Barsham, All Saints Church, (Walsingham), The base of the tower only, now used as porch, a turret with 1 bell, nave chancel and north porch. The walls are 13th century and 14th century, but most of the windows Perpendicular. there is a fine monument erected by James Calthorpe to his wife, daughter of Robert Brooke, Alderman of London, died 1640, and to four of their children, 1627-37. This church stands on a site which has been used for Christian worship since Saxon times. Here the medieval bell belonging to the Crostwight group (mid 15th century) was cracked and had to be recast in 1900 by J. Warner and Sons of London, and rehung in a new froam by George Day of Eye. The nave windows are Perpendicular, and may have been attributed at the same time, and to the Femor family who lived at the time at the hall. it is said that Henry VIII walked barefoot from here to the Shrine at Walsingham in 1511, to pray for his infant son by Catherine of Aragon. (The child did not survive) and Henry subsequently dissolved the Abby (Priory) Inside , the font is Early English, it has eight supporting legs of unusual design. The church has a Jacobean pulpit and is 17th century. A new Benefice was created of Great and Little Walsingham, Houghton Saint Giles and the Barshams in 1995. Electricity was installed as late as 1999 and heating in 2001.
