East Raynham Saint Mary's Church.

East Raynham Saint Mary's Church, A lovely surprise, this church a short drive from the main village of East Raynham, is situated in the middle of a field near Fakenham. There is no money that wasn't spent on this lavish, large building. It would be more in place in a large town or city. It was lots of wealth spent on it, lots of carvings, the church has loads of War Graves, showing it close presence to local air bases.East Raynham Saint Mary's Church, 1868, by Clark & Holland. In the church a very big and sumptuous Easter Sepulchre. This was made by the will of Sir Roger Townsend's widow to commemorate him and herself. the will was made in November 1499. She left the money for the monument and cunningly graven a Sepulchre for Easter Day. Unfortunately this important piece is over-restored. Tomb chest with three panels with shields set in ornate foiling or tracery. Broad surround, panelled recess, with four centred arch. Big attic, again with foiled or traceried panels. Against the back wall five stepped niches of very fine, partly pierced work with fragments of the former statuettes. Opposite a recess east of the piscina on three re-used spiral-fluted Norman shafts. Brass to Robert Godfrey 1522, Brass to George Townsend a boy 1500ish and a white marble with two big sentimental angels to Lord Charles Vere Ferrars Townsend 1852. East Raynham Saint Mary's Church. Has a square tower, a clock and 3 bells, nave with aisles, north porch and two south porches, one being to the priest's door. This church is situated on the verge of a Park. it was rebuilt in 1868 by John Villiers, 5th Marquess Townshend. The style is mainly Decorated, and all the walls are embattled. There is a brass in the north aisle to the Rev. Robert Godfrey, rector died 1522. Another brass to George, son of Roger Townshend, Justice of the court of Common Pleas, died 1493.
