Easter Sepulchres of Norfolk

Easter Sepulchres of Norfolk, I read on the internet that Norfolk only has three Easter Sepulchres, I thought that to be a misleading fact, so i have set about compiling my own list. As this means me going through all the churches on this site, it may take a while, I will add to this page as and when I come across one. I will attempt to list them all. Grimston has no actual Easter Sepulchres, but it has a altar on the north side that could well have been used for Easter ceremonies. In mediaval times the Host and crucifix were transferred from the altar to an Easter Sepulchre, and there devotionally watched day and night from Good Friday until Easter morning. These Easter Sepulchres (sybolising the entombment of our Lord) were set up on the north side of the chancel, as close to the altar as possible, being placed sometimes on a nearby tomb, at other times in a specially designed recess (which can be seen in many of our churches of Norfolk). Cautley wrote: From existing records it is clear that many of these were of wooden construction and such were all destroyed in the 16th century, some wooden Easter Sepulchres were turned into Communion tables and another converted into a funeral bier, many were in rich stonework, and these curiously enough, were allowed to remain.
  1. Baconsthorpe, Saint Mary, Intact. nice 14th century on in the chancel.
  2. Blakeney, Saint Nicholas,
  3. Crostwight, All Saints,
  4. East Raynham,
  5. Kelling, Saint Mary, intact.
  6. Martham, Saint Mary,
  7. Northwold, Saint Andrew, this has been sadly treated, with the top missing and the sleeping soldiers sadly mutilated.
  8. Plumstead, Saint Michael, are scant remains.
  9. Ranworth, Saint Helen, there is a small wooden portion still preserved here.
  10. Reedham, Saint John the Baptist, (possble)
  11. Thetford, Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
  12. Tivetshall, There is an early sepulchre slab in recess on north side of the chancel.
  13. Trunch, the window sill on north side of the sanctuary has also been dropped to serve as its Easter Sepulchre.
