Elsing, Saint Mary Church, This 14th century church set in the Norfolk countryside between Dereham, Fakenham and Norwich. Was built by Sir Hugh Hastings who died in 1347, and his wife Lady Margery died in 1349, though there is some evidence that there was a church on the site prior.  Thought to be the widest unsupported nave than any in East Anglia, possibly the UK. It also has an octagonal font and what I thought one of the prettiest in the region. The churches East window contained 14th century glass, there until 1781 when broken by gales. After 1781, the glass was collected and put into various boxes, but collectors and some neglect reduced that amount. The remainder place into two South windows. The church also has its original 15th century screen. Plus a huge brass designed from the original, of Sir Hugh. It is said to be one of the best and most important in Europe. Elsing, Saint Mary Church. Square west tower, 5 bells, nave, (the widest non-pillared in England), sacristy, chancel and north and south porches. Entirely in the Decorated style, completed about 1340, the finest example of this style in the county. Built by Sir Hugh Hastings, who was Commander-in-Chief of the armies of Edward III. He was born in this village, and built the church as a thanks-offering for victories in France. He lies buried beneath a very fine brass. A fine late 14th font cover. The base of rood screen with traces of fine paintings on panels. The organ is built of constructed by Norman & Beard Ltd of London.
Two south windows of chancel contain 14th century glass fro east window, the latter being blown in by a storm in 1862. An ossuary (a place for bones) exists under the east window, with internal entrance near the Communion rails and external entrance underneath the east window.
