Erpingham, Saint Marys Church, Square west tower, 4 bells, nave with south aisle, chancel and south porch. The chancel is late Decorated, but the rest mainly Perpendicular. Shields and ornament adorn the base and top of the tower. There is a brass, dated 1370, to Sir John Erpingham, father of Sir Thomas Erpingham, who commenced the building of this church. Lord Bardolph is said to have finished it. Erpingham, in the early days when men had no fixed surname, came a family which took its name from the place they lived and called themselves Erpingham. The family vanished but the name lives on, for Sir Thomas Erpingham is one of the smaller figures in Shakespeare greatly loved. Though his family has gone the noble tower he added to the church still dominates the village. His grandfather, who left 20 shillings to the church and six and eightpence to the altar. lies near the door, and the portrait of his father Sir John Eringham is on one of the finest brasses in the land, set here after his death in 1370. He is a martial figure, armoured from head to foot, his hand on a sword and a fierce lion at his foot.
