Fersfield, Saint Andrew Church, IP22-2BC, Fersfield Church, I found this on the way to yet another church I had typed in the Postcode to. What a delight. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, and coming under an Ipswich Postcode, I had to check my Norfolk list, done by The Church of England. As Pevsner wrote: Of 1300 century, the south doorway and the south aisle and west window. The rest Perpendicular, there is the odd, small and narrow unbuttressed west tower, that could be of any date, The chancel all Victorian. South arcade of two bays. Pier with elongated polygonal protection without capitals and slender polygonal ones with capitals. The font is Norman, but altered. It has the most exquisite decoration cut into each top corner. There is Jacobean and other panelling, There is a glass covered wooden effigy of a Knight, shown to be one Sir Robert du Bois 1311. boldly coloured and laying feet on his hound. There is a Ledger stone of Francis Blomefield 1752, the Norfolk historian, who was rector of Fersfield. On the wall too is a list of former rectors. Fersfield, Saint Andrew Church, west tower, south porch, nave, south aisle and chancel. The tower is very narrow being only 13' 6" outside and 6' 9" inside. There is a curious set-off outside the north nave wall of 9' about 4' up. I take this as the old wall which, when they heightened it, was reduced in width. The 16th century brick porch has its original roof. The top of bowl to font is Norman, but seems to have been patched and a new shaft fitted in the 13th century. Modern roof and fittings. 15th century arcade and an arched recess tomb in aisle with one of the rare wooden effifies, all the rarer because it is coloured, and said to be of Sir Robert de Bois who died in 1311. Santus bell window in tower, and in a recess in chancel is a female figure carved in stone and said to be Amicia, the mother of the above-mentioned Sir Robert. A yew chest with slihtly incised patterns, a fine early 17th century table, Jacobean panelling round sanctuary and a fine early set of Anne's Arms dated 1703.
