Forncett Saint Mary, Saint Mary Church, NR16-1JG.

Forncett Saint Mary, Saint Mary Church, west tower, north porch, nave and chancel. All modern roofs and fittings. The font may be 15th century and is octagonal with four of the sides curiously recessed. Plain Stuart pulpit and rails, (round font). Cautley. Afraid I left a negative record in the diary. The church has the whole of the pew, benches ripped out and modern chairs placed. The church has all of its previous history taken out and replaced by modern chairs, which in turn, will need replacing in a few years time. Messent wrote that the tower is and the rest of the church are mainly Perpendicular. The ancient font is of interest. The Rev. Dr Colenso, who was rector here in the middle of the last century, became Bishop of Natal. He was the author of some very learned books on mathematics and theology. Pevsner suggested that the tower was thin, unbuttressed, with battlements with flush work panelling. Nave and chancel, the latter built in 1869. The pulpit is a simple 17th century effort, and the Communion rail, Jacobean, used as a font rail. The village has three churches, the most prominent Forncett Saint Peter's Church, then this one of Forncett Saint Mary and the third of Forncett End. Forncett Saint Mary a short distance from the other two.
