Garboldisham, Saint John the Baptist Church, Owned by the Abbey at Ely in 1045, this church was given to Wilfric, the 6th Abbot of that house. Wilfric had a brother called Gudmund, who, on proposing marriage to a nobleman's daughter, was refused on the basis that he did not own sufficient land. To rectify the situation, the Abbot privately made over to Gudmund several manors belonging to the Abbey, among which was part of Garboldisham. The monks heard what had happened and claimed the land back. The Abbot died of grief. Garboldisham was once spelled Gerbodesham, The porch is a second one, the original was built into the tower and was called a Galilee Porch, its outline of this can be seen on the west face. The clock is made by a London firm, Turner, dated 1862.  The church has a 17th century chest and a fine carved font, probably from the 13th century, the pedestal bottom is modern. Garboldisham, Saint John the Baptist Church. West tower, north porch, nave, north and south aisles and chancel. Fine 15th century tower with good base-course having flint flush work, crowned M's, sacred monogram, etc. Nice parapet with pinnacles, and at one time a western Galilee porch as before mentioned. Nice porch with niches on either side of arch, and inscribed with a prayer for the soul of William Pece. Small Sanctus bell turret. Lofty 14th century arcades with four two-light clerestory windows and lofty tower arch. The roof has an arch braced tie-beam, with the heaviest common rafters I have met with (Cautley)  A few simple bench ends with double arm rests, and the base of a 15th century coloured screen remains in north chapel, having four painted figures of inscribed saints, one of them Saint Mary Magdalene. Some of the tracery of old screen work forms the back of nave benches. Double piscina, Sanctus bell window in tower and a good set of Anne's Arms carved in wood.
