Great Bircham St Mary the Virgin Church.

Great Bircham St Mary the Virgin Church, Near Docking, with square west tower, with small spire, 5 bells, situated at west end of south aisle, nave with aisles, chancel, and north porch. The style is a mixture of Decorated and Perpendicular, with portions of earlier work incorporated, including a Transitional Norman doorway from tower into the south aisle. There are some ancient brasses, one representing a priest in his robes. The altar table is dated 1640. There are tablets in the church to the Layland family.
Great Bircham St Mary the Virgin Church. west tower, north porch, nave, north and southaisles and chancel. This church has the tower at the west of south aisle which enables a great 15th century west window in nave to flood it with light. A nice 15th century porch shelters a late 13th century doorway with two engaged columns and a stoup. Externally at the east end. the kneelers to gable are hooked down. This I have not met before, but it is a useful idea and would tend to prevent these adjuncts to coping slipping outwards, which happens often. Inside there are lofty and graceful arcades with clustered columns and seats round the bases. On the east of tower is a late 12th century doorway, 13th century font with shallow arcading all round and simple 15th century square headed screen. Modern roofs and benches. In chancel is a simple cusped and canopied sedilia with piscina and a table which looks Elizabethan. Hanoverian Arms. The old 15th century cope, made into a frontal, which belonged to this church, is in Saint Peter Hungate, Norwich.
