Great Ellingham, Saint James Church.

Great Ellingham, Saint James Church, this church has west tower, north porch, nave, north and south aisles and chancel. The tower is 14th century with chequered parapet and small lead spire. Simple early 15th century font. The roof to nave is arch-braced tie-beam with traceried spandrils. 14th south arcade, nice remains of traceried base to chancel screen with original colour. In the centre of each panel is a stooled niche. Unfortunately the figures and overlay, (overlay is any superimposed carving over the tracery) to arch have disappeared. In the south aisle are traces of wall paintings, a turbanned pilgrom with his staff passing a preaching cross and two Consecration Crosses. There is also a 14th century niche which must have been fine before mutilation, with traces of colour, the painting of an angel being intact. Lower part of parclose screen with colour, dropped window sill sedilia, a 14th century double piscina that to east with carved cusp terminals. The rood loft entrance in north aisle is very low and I suspect passage to the Rood was by low chapel screens and steps up to rood screen. The 14th century chancel is brilliantly lit by a huge five-light east window and side windows, those to the south being particularly fine, but is rather spoilt by a terrible roof. Dropped window sill sedilia and a good piscina. Great Ellingham, Saint James Church, near Attleborough, has square west tower with spire, 5 bells, nave with aisles, chancel and north porch. Mainly in the Decorated style. The tracery in the windows is particulary fine, especially the east one. The south chancel ones are somewhat flamboyant in design, that is, French 15th century Gothic. There is a mural painting near the south doorway. The piscina and sedilia in the chancel are of interest. There is a memorial to Fysher Colman 1758 by sculptor T, Stafford.
