Great Massingham Saint Mary's Church.

Great Massingham Saint Mary's Church stands proud in a village of greens and ponds, it has a public house and store very closely, and serves this village well. It has one of the highest towers of any church in Norfolk that has a Pung of King's Lynn bell dated from as late as 1853, it has four bells in total that are still regularly rung! And a 13th century front porch that graces lots of columned open arches, these more sited in a larger cathedral building. The building also has a 14th century font that stands just inside the door on the south arcade, the church has its ancient pews, five of these with pierced backs, repaired and made good. The church has some fine 15th century tracery windows. Great Massingham Saint Mary's Church, square west tower, a clock and 4 bells, nave with aisles, chancel and south porch. The porch is a fine example of Early English work, with six lancet windows each side, and lofty pinnacles at its extreme angles. The rest of the church is in the Perpendicular style. There is a fine west window and doorway to the tower. The rood staircase remains. Many of the internal fittings are modern. The church plate is very good and was presented in 1677 by Charles Calthorpe, Esq. The churchwarden's books date back to 1758. Late 13th century arcades and 14th century octagonal font, with shallow pedimented and crocketted and cusp ornament on bowl. There are seven 15th century benches with traceried arm-rests and grotesques, and pierced and traceried backs, which in recent times have been tilted to make them more comfortable! The original back bench is resting against the wall with carved panels below the seat. Plain three compartment sedilia and piscina. There is some stained glass that is original in the chancel. Pevsner mentions that the plate is London made by Paten and Flagon, 1658, Paten 1697 and a chalice of 1700.
