Harpley Saint Lawrence Church

Harpley Saint Lawrence Church, one of the largest, beautiful churches I have yet to have been in. Dated in the Decorated Period, I was struck by the amazing rood screens, so colourful in their images done in the 1294-1332 period. They survived the Reformation and show what most churches would have looked like of this time. it has a priest's door too of late 13th century. On entering this building through the 15th century South porch door, once ornate, but with its niches empty. One of the pictures shows a Bath Chair, these were used sometimes for the immobile like me and were loaned by a firm from what was then on the corner of the Millfleet in King's Lynn. (Old Bus Station) This church incorporates stained glass from the 14th/ 15th and also modern ages. Good examples of non defaced rood screens are here too. The font is one of the nicest in Norfolk. The whole church, my favourite to date. I need to return, I had my brain tumour at the time of visiting, I thought the camera was in focus, alas it, for much of the time was not! Built by Sir Robert Knowles (Knollys) a famous general in the wars with France in the reigns of Edward III and Richard II. He was Knight of the Garter. Harpley Saint Lawrence Church, south west tower, south porch, nave, north and south aisles and chancel. This beautiful church has a south west tower allowing a fine west window to nave. The early 15th century porch has three niches outside, and inside is panelled with two windows each side. A fine contemporary door with a wicket, all traceried, having a surround of canopied figures. The south aisle has a stone panelled parapet, rather too shallow to be really effective, with armourial shields, chiefly of the Knolly's family who built it, but some with saint Lawrence's gridiron. The early 14th century chancel has the unusual feature of a crocketted gable coping. Some interesting tracery in the windows, a beautiful priest's door with cusped and crocketted ogee arch, and a small low side window blocked up. Inside it has wall seats round west end, 14th century arcades with five great three-light clerestory windows. The roof is interesting, it is 15th century arch-braced with a knuckle bend at the top, which is in fact a sort of colar, a deep cornice with a series of angels and a ridge at the top formed with two high up purlins, and a panel between them carved with angels. There is a good screen with a group of prophets, alas, all repainted. The screen has doors. Many 15th century benches with grotesques and figures, and traceried and pierced backs. The front bench is inscribed for John Martin 1638. In the south aisle is a 14th century graduated sedilia and piscina with detached columns, and cinquefoiled arches under a horizontal label. The chancel is early 14th century has a fine door leading to sacristy which was formerly vaulted, with multi cusped ogee arch, pierced spandril and traceried and battlemented panel over. Plain arched Easter Sepulchre 5'10" wide and a terribly multilated sedilia and double piscina. A little 14th century glass in east window of south aisle and fine 15th century glass in tracery of west window.
