Hethersett's Saint Remigius Church, with its tower toped by a leaded spire, is very ornate inside. Hethersett and its origins in its ancient village looks to have come about before the Norman Conquest. Previously known as Hedersata, thought to be from meaning an enclosure for deer. or forest covered area. Thought to have a roll of rectors since 1260. The main body of the present church, the nave and tower was built 14th century. The clerestory, and there were modifications to the outside also. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the original chancel fell into ruin. If you look up you can see around the arches various biblical texts. These Victorian and at one time all the walls were covered with Victorian decoration which made the church very dark. This was covered up in 1975 leaving just the texts. The churches 14th century font has been moved twice with-in the last 50 years, first from an off-centre position in the west aisle to the central location and raised on the present plinth, and then to its present position ready for the developments in the west end. Hethersett, Saint Remigius Church, west tower, north porch, nave, north and south aisles and chancel. Good 14th century tower, with chequered base course and niches in first stage of buttresses, and another over west window. 15th century porch with parvise over and good groining, with the Coronation of the Virgin in central boss. It has canopied niches flanking the window of parvise. The 14th century octagonal font has traceried bowl and eight plain hexagonal columns round central shaft. 14th arcades and modern roof and fittings. There is a monument to Issac Motham 1703/4 by London sculptor Stanton. (Edward Stanton (sculptor) of London (1681–1734), an Englishsculptor and monumental mason, and monumental mason active in early 18th-century England, and son of William Stanton (mason) Monument to Bishop Fleetwood of Ely (d..1723) in north chancel aisle of Ely Cathedral ).
