Saint Edmunds Church, Hunstanton,
Hunstanton Saint Edmund's Church.

On the plans for Saint Edmunds Church, Hunstanton, was a tower topped by a small spire reminiscent to that of Barton Bendish's. Plans were drawn up for a whole new town in fact. A new Railway Station was built and a seaside town was born. This only one hundred years ago in 1819, in 1861 there were 500 inhabitants. There was already one church at Old Hunstanton (St Mary's) And a ruined church dedicated to Saint Edmund there in Old Hunstanton too, but the Le Strange family built this. Saint Edmunds, now without both a tower or a spire sits among shops and chippies on a busy street around 400 yards from the beach. Offa, an Anglo-Saxon King of East Anglia, concerned about the succession to the throne, chose a relative, the young Saxon prince Edmund. After the King's death, Edmund, at the age of around 14, crossed the North Sea and landed at Hunstanton in AD 855. He spent a year there and at Attleburgh studying under the saintly bishop Humbert of Elmham: it is said he learned the Psalter by heart. Edmund was crowned by bishop Humbert at Bures Saint Mary, Suffolk, on Christmas Day 856. He ruled well for about a decade. Saint Edmund Old Hunstanton, bell-cot with 1 bell, nave with aisles, chancel and south porch. This church was built in 1879, and has quite a number of different coloured materials in its walls, including flint, the local carrstone, and red clunch. It is mainly a copy of the 14th century style. The carved oak pulpit came from Peterborough Cathedral in 1892, being presented by H.P. Gates, Esq., J.P. The east window is in memory of the Rev. Adolphus Waller, M.A., M.A., Vicar 1870-1890. The organ is built or constructed by Norman & Beard Ltd of London.
