Kirby Cane All Saints Church, near Bungay, many thanks to the lovely Mr Jamie Napier church warden for rushing his dinner, letting me in and showing me around. Round west tower, 5 bells, nave with north aisle, chancel, vestry and south porch. The tower, south doorway and parts of the chancel walls are Norman, the rest of the church is a mixture of all three periods of Gothic. There are memorials to Lord and Lady Berners, and another to Elizabeth Cantelyne, who died in 1691. There is a tablet, recording that the vestry was built by Sir Charles Turner, Bart., in 1753. At Kirby Cane All Saints Church, the round tower has curious little pilaster strips about 4 feet, high round its base, probably pre-Conquest, the church has a beautiful Norman south doorway, with one engaged saft to jambs, grafetti, some dated 1644 on both door and jamb. The font is 14th century, and has a beautiful cover. The font has engaged columns to shaft, angels to corona with typical period head-dress and traceried bowl. There is a beautiful Stuart table and Pulpit. There is lots in the church that give interest. There are Arms and a beautiful Paper cutting rendition to the Lord's Prayer, also as Jamie and myself mentioned: Hatchments, many churches have a diamond shaped board, bearing a coat of arms, some have one or more. The board bears the coat of arms of the family whose coat it is. Dating from the 17th century in age, these boards were carried in the funeral procession of that family members funeral. The composition of the boards followed a formalised pattern, the background is black on the left hand side if the dead person was a husband, black on the right if a wife, if a bachelor, widow or widower, the whole back ground would be black. .
