Knapton SS Peter and Paul Church, near North Walsham, what seems to be a dread-locked town with a one way system that gets drivers to go around and around. Knapton itself a beautiful little church with lots of features: square west tower, 5 bells, nave, chancel, south porch, and more angels, than I have ever seen in any other norfolk church. The style is transitional Decorated and Perpendicular. There is a magnificent double hammer-beam roof, erected in 1503 by John Smithe. It is the finest in the county. There is an ancient rood screen. The ancient font too is of interest. The weather vane on the tower consists of a cockerel and stencilled flag-piece, and was made from a drawing by John Sell Cotman. Cautley wrote: Knapton SS Peter and Paul Church, north west tower, south porch, nave and chancel. the glory of this church is in its roof, covering the enormous span of 30 feet 6 inches. It is a double hammer-beam of rather flat pitch. Arch-braced between wall posts, with three tiers of angels and brattished purlins, it is partly coloured and is a beautiful sight. The typical 13th century Purbeck font, standing on three steps, has a cover dated 1704, bearing the Greek palindrome (Wash my sins and not my face only) it is curious that the west window has a three-light window above it. There is a fine 15th century square-headed screen of perhaps rather coarse detail, but alas it is painted and grained! The old corbels for rood-beam remain on either side of chancel arch, and at the west of nave are many early sepulchral stones. The south porch is 14th century and has a triple niche over entrance and there is a small porch to priest's door. Modern benches and Stuart table.
