Matlaske, Saint Peter Church

Matlaske Saint Peter's Church

A round towered church with a lovely sounding name! I was really looking forward in coming to Matlaske Saint Peter's Church!. it has some nice features too, not just the round tower, but its funeral bier, the way I wish to be carried to my final destination. I certainly don't want some poor sole having to carry me on their shoulders, despite this bier not having wheels (If I must go, I'd have to be pushed) its surely easier. The church has an R.A.F. memorial on the south wall commemorating the R.A.F. Commonwealth and Fleet Air Squadrons that all served at Matlaske in the Second WW, it has been estimated that some 2,000 personnel were there, and 22 different squadrons were based there in that period, .The font that is plain and carefully repaired. it had a lock in medieval times. its top medieval in look too! It has a Jacobean communion table. And Commandment Boards. Matlaske Saint Peter's Church. Near Holt, round tower with octagonal top storey, ! bell, nave with south aisle but no clerestory. The chancel collapsed on Sunday March 19th 1726, during Divine service (all escaped unhurt), and the east end of the nave now serves as a chancel. There are north and south porches. The latter has its external doorway blocked up and is used as a vestry. The base of the tower is Norman and 14th century above. The rest of the church is transitional Decorated and Perpendicular. Several of the windows are square headed. There are also some ancient poppy heads.
