Metton, Saint Andrew Church, NR11-8QX

The Church of Saint Andrew Metton, is built entirely of Norfolk flint, it has stone quoins and dressings. It's date would seem to be more or less contemporary with that of Felbrigg Saint Margaret Church. The fine square battlement tower has an unusual feature in the arched passage which runs through its base; a heavy and damaging growth of ivy was removed from it in 1931. The font, octagonal in shape, but plain and uncarved, it stands on a single step. West tower, north porch, nave and chancel. The tower was built up to the western boundary of the churchyard and so to allow processions to pass round the church and altar, two arches were placed in the north and south walls. Modern fittings and match boarded ceilings, but probably a form of single-framed rafter roof, for the old cornice and short hammer beams remain to anchor the plate. There was a dropped window sill sedilia, but this has been built up, and a curious little piscina with head to support the bowl.
