Mundford, Saint Leonards Church.

Mundford St Leonard's Church, dates back to around 1220, this is when the chancel was built. Other parts were added later, the vestry as late as 1900 the porch 1700s And the Nave around 1400. There was another tower built at the west of the church, but that fell down in 1747 The church was really in a dilapidated state. The tower was built on the corner of the corner of the south west side when other work was incorporated to repair the west wall too. The font is 14th century, and has a later 17th century top. Around the font are shields and mutilated angels. Rumour has it they were damaged in the Civil War, it was more likely they were damaged when the tower fell in the storm of 1854. The tower has one bell, this marked Robert Gurney made me 1670. Some of the decoration to the church was commissioned by Captain Montagu of Lyndford Hall, he commissioned one Sir Ninian Comper to add some colour to a relatively plain church. The outcome is fantastic. Mundford St Leonard's Church, square tower, at the south-west angle, with high pitched gabled roof with small spire, nave, chancel and north porch. The style is mainly Decorated with much later restoration. The tower was rebuilt in 1850. Part of the rood screen is old. Many of the internal fittings are modern.
