Needham Saint Peters Church, unable to get to view inside, as now with much of my site having to rely on information from books. Cautley wrote: west tower, south porch, nave and chancel. Normal round tower with 15th century belfry stage and built on circular staircase to south of tower. 15th century arch braced nave and roof, with later tie-beams inserted to brace walls. Transitional font and a few old poppy-headed benches. Chancel rebuilt in 1735. On the back of an old stall are inscribed the words. "USE WELL THY TIME FOR DEFTE IS COMYING M" "THE SENTENCE OF GOD ALMIGHTY IS EVERLASTING E". The most interesting thing is the brick 15th century porch, with octagonal piers at front corners and carved brick quatrefoils round arch and under crow steps, and a carved brick niche. Messent wrote: near Harleston, Needham Saint Peters Church, with round west tower with octagonal top storey, 3 bells, nave, chancel and south porch. The base of the tower is Norman, but late Perpendicular at the top with brick quoins. The chancel was rebuilt in 1835. The rest of the church is mainly 15th century. The font is of interest. Arthur Mee wrote: The village sacrificed twelve men in England's darkest hour, and among those that came back were three who won honour for heroic service. It is part of the road from Harleston to Scole with the Waveney flowing by, and has attractive cottages, an inn with a dainty sign, and a flint school looking out from a churchyard where tulips, forget-me-nots, and laburnums grow. The Normans gave it the round flint tower with its simple and sturdy arch, and 15th century added the octagonal belfry. From this time comes the nave, and the quaint brick porch with stepped gable, a turret at each corner, and old roof; Saint Peter with his fishing net and his keys in a niche over the modern entrance. The font has worn lions at the foot and worn angel heads under a bowl adorned with roses. There are also two old chests.
