 North Elmham Saint Marys Church,

North Elmham Saint Mary's Church.

North Elmham Saint Marys Church, is positioned just yards away from the ruins of what could have been a much larger building at North Elmham, Saint Marys, with it's square tower, clock and 8 bells, a nave with aisles, chancel and south and west porches, these formed between the buttresses, with vaulted roof and a boss of the Coronation of the Virgin. the Pillars of the nave are late Norman, and transitional Early English and all three periods of Gothic are to be found in the church. In the north aisle windows are remains of 14th century stained glass. Base of rood screen with coloured panels of saints. There are monuments in the chancel to Richard Milles, esq and to Richard Warner, who built Elmham Hall, died 1757. The carved pulpit dates from 1626, some old bench ends with carvings. North Elmham Saint Marys Church, west tower, south porch, nave, north and south aisles, chancel and south and north chancel chapels. Fine late 14th century tower with salient angles and rectagular buttresses. Exceptionally interesting west porch, cut in between the western buttresses with a groined roof, the central boss having the Coronation of the Virgin. It looks as if the western arch of porch had at one time been surmounted by a small rood group. On the north of the church is most unusual 13th century doorway, with six curious carved capitals rising from the arch and supporting a small hood. Inside the appearance is imposing with its lofty 13th century arcades, which look as if they had been heightened when the clerestory was built, poor arch-braced roof with no collar and large window over chancel arch. The tower was obviously built after the nave as the buttresses are inside the church and butt up to the older piers of arcade and has a Sanctus bell window. Modern font with old 15th century shaft. Some old bench ends with grotesques and 17th century western screen and pulpit. Base of old screen with 17 painted figures, those on the south side inscribed. The 14th century north aisle windows have considerable remains of contemporary glass in the tracery.
