Norton Subcourse Saint Mary Church is a beautifully maintained little church near Loddon, with its round tower, 6 bells, nave and chancel, it must draw in the people who want to view it. I did notice on my visit another person from the same village had ventured here. The base of the tower is Norman, but Early English above. The rest of the church is mainly in the Decorated style. Several of the windows have good tracery of that period, especially the east one, and some have ancient stained glass in them. Cautley wrote: Norton Subcourse Saint Mary Church, west tower, nave and chancel (no chancel arch) The round tower which has an unusually large diameter, has a doorway high up on the east side and is probably pre-Conquest. The nave has a width of 23 feet. Modern roofs (some loose tiles in 2018, and fittings) Typical 13th century Purbeck marble font, octagonal in shape, with the usual two flat pointed arches on each side, fine 14th century east window and good 14th century graduated sedilia and double piscina with clustered columns, cinquefoiled arch, in ogee shape, and finials. Low arched tomb in north chancel, (Empty) and the Arms of William IV. Pevsner wrote, One tie-beam across the nave. This is an 18th century security measure. It rests on ionic pilasters. The casing of the beam is later.
