With it's 14th century South Porch, it's choir stalls and font, probably of the 15th century, its carved medieval figures, its Rood screen and Bier, Ooooh and a thatched roof, I love this church that seems by the Norman door to have stood in this village before or around the Norman Conquest. It has a pulpit and Lectern carved by Major George Keppel a local resident and grandson of the 4th earl of Albemarke. Once almost all Norfolk churches had reed thatched roofs, because of people moving away, the increase in prosperity and the change of many churches to tiles or slate, Old Buckenham is one of only a few left. Old Buckenham has pews, these originated in the 17th century, and were re-seated in 1858. This church has a west tower, nave, south porch, south and north aisles and chancel. The 14th century tower is octagonal from the base upwards and has at each salient angle a small banded shaft. A brick parapet has been added. The nave and chancel are thatched. The north aisle has crowned initials in flint and stone on the buttresses and a simple Norman doorway. Inside the church is rather bare of interest. A plain 15th century font, bier dated 1666 and Royal Arms too dark to make out, but possibly Hanoverian. In the chancel there are very nice bench ends with mutilated figures on arm-rests, a Stuart altar and on the south side a holed bracket for the lenten veil. There is some medieval stained glass and monuments to the Knevet family. The church has 6 bells. The largest village green in the county is at Old Buckenham.
