Plumstead, Saint Michael Church. What a beautiful little church, its guide to the church giving lots of information too. One of the only churches that I have seen with the devil/Satan in pictures on their stained glass windows. The church contains a "Scratch Dial", often I see these, but this one is low down near the door and stooping is difficult for me. (The scratch dial, a primitive form of sundial used to help determine the correct time for services, in an age when clocks were exceptionally rare or non-existent. A peg/gnomon was placed in a hole in the centre of the circle and the sun cast a shadow on the line of the dial, this particular one had a metal peg.) The church benefits from having a 15th century tower, and has both pinnacles and knapped flint flushwork. ( a material found in abundance to this day) The church has four gargoyles, these represent the four Gospel-writing Evangelists as a winged ox, eagle, a man and a lion. Plumstead, Saint Michael's Church, has a west tower, nave and chancel, modern roofs and benches. There was once a south aisle with clerestory above (now blocked), and piers and arches appear in the south wall. There are traces of an Easter Sepulchre once vaulted and canopied.
