A beautiful church with an Octagonal tower is Raveninghams Saint Andrew's Church, near Loddon. it has 5 bells, nave, chancel, north aisle and south porch. The church is situated inside a Park. The tower is Early English, the rest of the church about a century later with some Perpendicular windows inserted. The square-headed clerestory windows are curiously grouped in pairs. There are four recesses on each side of the chancel, under canopies in which are monumental tablets to the Bacon family. On the south side of the chancel is a tomb to its founder Roger Castell. There is a monument in the north aisle to Major Hodge, 7th Hussars, who was killed at Waterloo. The Bacon family have been great benefactors to this church. John Betjeman who was thought an authority on churches, actually wrote nothing on this church! Pevsner though, went into depth about Raveningham Saint Andrew's Church. Set in parkland, the church is all cemented, it has a round tower, with octagonal Early English top. It has double-step Perpendicular battlements with flushwork panelling. The chancel fenestration seems all of 13th century and such a date the extraordinary recess inside would match, if it is original and in situ. It looks exactly like a founder's tomb cum Easter Sepulchre, but would then surely not be on the south side. Perhaps it is re-set from the north. The nave has a north aisle, but the arcade is so ruthlessly cemented over that no dating can be attempted. The font is octagonal, with four lions and four saints, this seen in many churches of Norfolk. The south door ironwork in form of three foliated crosses. A beautiful piece of simple 13th century craftsmanship, the stained glass in the east window is by Kempe, 1885.
