The tower is Norman with a 19th century octagonal top for the bells. The fine old church has five niches on the front. the jacobean pulpit is heavily carved; and the nave has an old hammerbeam roof. There are two pathetic inscriptions in memory of the oldest and youngest sons of a rector, one  a boy of 11 who died in a fire and one drowned while trying to save a comrade. One of the Freres, lords of the manor here, was the brilliant John Hookham Frere, remembered for his glorious tranlation of the work of Aristophanes; another was Sir Henry Bartle Frere, famous in South African diplomacy. He saw much of the horror of the Indian Mutiny, arranged for the abolition of the Zanzibar Slave Trade, was Governor of the Cape, and had charge of the settlement of native affairs in South Africa with a view to a federation of all the South African colonies. He was held responsible for the Zulu War in which occured the disaster of Rorke's Drift, because he had exceeded instructions fro home in not being lenient to Cetewayo. Mr Gladstone spoke bitterly against him in his famous Midlothian campaign, and he was recalled. He lies in Saint Paul's Cathedral.
