Salthouse Saint Nicholas Church

Salthouse Saint Nicholas Church, not to be mistaken for Salhouse nr Wroxham in Norfolk. Salthouse is one of a few churches known as The Weybourne Group of Parishes on the North Norfolk Coast. Situated on top of a hill with fantastic views of sea and heath. This 15th century church is built on the same site as another earlier church, the 13th century tower remains. In the churchyard is a ruined chapel, the church itself has a high elegant oak arch-braced roof, It has a 15th century octagonal lion font with carved panels, there is also a remains of a painted rood screen dating back to 1513, defaced during the Reformation. There is also graffiti dating back to the 16th century on choir stalls and screens showing signs of ships. Salthouse or Salthus meaning house for storing salt. The arch braced 15th century roof is continous from west to east and is arch braced between wall posts with a cornice filled with large quatrefoils, like Brinton, about 18" deep, and has shields in the centres. 15th century arcades with armorial shields at apex to these. Plain arch-braced roofs to aisles, and a curious arrangement of aisle windows, which are rather narrow, each having the splayed jambs taken down to form a window seat. 15th century font with emblems of passion and the Evangelists on two high steps. The lower part of rood screen remains with 20 mutilated painted figures. It is dated behind it, giving excellent shadow. The middle rail and curious scratchings of ships all over them. Old Stuart table and black and white text, north of rails dated 1638.
Two hundred and fifty six churches had banners, and in two other former banners had disappeared. The average number in each church is between one and three, at Reedham there was the prodigious number of fourteen banners, and here at Salthouse and  also West Walton had seven each.
