Scarning Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church, Scarning or Scerninga meaning: possibly dirty brook. The original word may be a derivative of Old English searn (dirt) which may have referred to a stream. west tower, south porch, nave, chancel and chantry chapel to north of same. The 15th century tower has nice panelled base course. Modern roofs and benches. Good late 12th century font with 17th century cover. The font has curious arched supports from central shaft to corner pillars below bowl. The 15th century screen is complaete to top of tracery and has traces of colour. Stuart table and Arms of George III. Scarning Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church, square west tower, a clock, and 5 bells, nave chancel with chantry chapel and south porch. The style is mainly early Perpendicular, incorporating some Decorated work, especially in the chancel. There is a fine rood screen in good state of preservation with Sanctus bell in it. The font is of interest. There is a piscina and aumbry in the chantry chapel, whish is now a vestry. This parish was the home of the Rev. Dr Augustus Jessopp, who was rector here during the second half of last century. There is some 19th century stained glass.
