Sculthorpe Saint Mary & All Saints Church.

Sculthorpe Saint Mary & All Saints Church, Arthur Mee in his book King's England (Norfolk) says, "In this place, Sculthorpe, lives the memory of two men famous in our wars with four centuries between them, the church was rebuilt by Sir Robert Knollys, who fought in the Hundred Years War, and the chancel was made new in memory of the son of one of Wellington's men. Knollys was one of the greatest captains of his age. We find him riding through the pages of Froissart in a fight which has found its way into ballads as the Combat of the Thirty, thirty picked champions fighting on each side with swords, axes and daggers. It was a brutal age, and all were killed or wounded, Knollys was among those who were nursed back to life, and after fought for 30 more years. In the chancel, the other, one, who was recorded by his father Sir John Thomas Jones, whose statue is in Saint Paul's Cathedral as being Lawrence Jones. Lawrence was killed by Turkish brigands, the chancel restored in his memory. Sculthorpe, Saint Mary and All Saints Church has inherited one of the four great Norman fonts of Norfolk. A group unsurpassed in the land. On this one four lions are seen holding in their mouths a rope of plait work round the rim of a square bowl, this has interlacing on three sides, and one panel with figures representing the Visit of the Wise Men to the Madonna and Child. The church has a tower of 600 plus years", Pevsner wrote, "Externally mostly Victorian, by Jekyll 1860-1861, the chancel rebuilt in 1847, and the south aisle added in 1860/1. The Original south porch tower, except for its top. This of early 14th century, see entrance and bell openings. Original also the Perpendicular north aisle. This with octagonal piers and double chamfered arches, there is some excellent early William Morris glass, two panels of Christ and the Waves in a chancels window and Spes, Fides and Caritas in the south aisle, east window, the latter designed by Burne-Jones, both windows early 1860s.
